IPC’s Heat Illness Prevention Plan

Protecting Our Team in High Heat Conditions

At IPC, the safety and well-being of our employees is our top priority—especially when working in hot environments. Our Heat Illness Prevention Plan outlines proactive steps to reduce the risks associated with high heat exposure.

Key Elements of the Plan

1. Comprehensive Training

  • Employees receive training on heat stress symptoms, hydration, rest, acclimatization, and emergency procedures.
  • Supervisors are trained to recognize heat-related illnesses, monitor crews, and implement emergency protocols.

2. Access to Water

  • Cool, palatable water is available at all work areas.
  • Supervisors ensure water supplies are maintained and accessible throughout the day.

3. Breaks and Cool Down Areas

  • Employees are encouraged to take unscheduled breaks in shaded, ventilated shelters.
  • Shelters are located near work areas and meet strict safety and comfort standards.
  • Vehicles are only considered cool down areas if air conditioning is functional.

4. Monitoring Conditions

  • Weather forecasts are reviewed weekly and daily.
  • Specific tasks and areas are monitored with thermometers to assess heat exposure.

5. Acclimatization Support

  • New employees are assessed and monitored during their acclimatization period.
  • Regular reminders and supervision help ensure safe adaptation to heat.

6. Heat Wave & High Heat Protocols

  • Defined as days over 95°F or significantly hotter than the previous week.
  • Includes mandatory breaks, buddy systems, and enhanced supervision and communication.

7. Responding to Heat Stress

  • Immediate action is taken when symptoms are reported.
  • Employees are never left alone until symptoms subside.
  • Emergency procedures are activated if conditions worsen.

8. Emergency Response Plan

  • Clear communication channels and rapid response protocols are in place.
  • Site responders and management are notified immediately in emergencies.

9. Additional Measures

  • Shift adjustments, cooling clothing, electrolyte supplements, and improved ventilation are used when feasible.
